Column Subtraction

A generator of column subtraction problems. Choose how many digits each number has (1 to 6) and the regrouping: none, one exchange, an exchange in every column, or mixed. The second number can also be a whole ten, hundred or thousand, for example 5400 – 300 = 5100. The answer is never negative.

On the website you place the problems on a worksheet. The layout with lines for working leaves room for the column method. You can add an answer key to the sheet. Every time you generate, you get new problems.

It suits children from Year 3 (2nd grade), when they start column subtraction, up to Year 6 (5th grade), when they subtract six-digit numbers. The regrouping levels help you move from easy problems to harder ones.
