Emotionally Coloured Czech Words

A set of 48 Czech word pairs to sort into two groups: positively coloured and negatively coloured. Each item is a neutral word with a coloured counterpart, for example “hora, majestátní vrchol” (mountain, majestic peak) as positive, or “píseň, odrhovačka” (song, ditty) as negative. Both groups have 24 pairs.

On the website you place the items into a sorting table where the child splits them into columns, onto a worksheet or into multiple-choice questions. Every time you generate, different items come in a different order.

It suits Czech-speaking lower secondary pupils learning to tell neutral words from emotionally coloured ones. It also starts a good discussion about how word choice changes the tone of a sentence.
