Division in Words

Elementary individually · in pairs print prep 2–5 minFREEMathematicsdivisionreadingfree

A generator of division problems written in words. Instead of 36 : 4 = children read “the quotient of 36 and 4”, “36 divided by four” or “a quarter of 36”. Choose a divisor from 2 to 15 and the answer is from 1 to 10, always with no remainder. Words such as half, third or “three times less than” appear with divisors up to 10. Another version divides numbers up to 100.

On the website you place the problems on a worksheet in columns or with lines for working, and add an answer key if you like. They also go on cards such as memory with the words and the answer, or into multiple-choice questions. Children first work out what the words mean and then calculate.

It suits children from Year 3 (2nd grade) dividing within the times tables. Half and quarter prepare them for fractions. The problems are written in Czech.
