Multi-Step Expressions
A generator of multi-step expressions where the order of operations matters, for example 6 + 4 · (9 − 7) = 14. Choose the number of operations from two to ten, whether the expression has brackets, and the operations: only adding and subtracting, with multiplication, or also division. The range is up to 20, 100, 1000 or 10 000. Multiplying and dividing stay within the times tables or use whole tens, and every intermediate result is a whole number of zero or more. The task is either to work out the result or to find the number replaced by x.
On the website you place the expressions on a worksheet and add an answer key if you like. They also go on game cards or into multiple-choice questions. Every time you generate, you get new expressions.
It suits children from Year 4 (3rd grade) for short expressions and lower secondary pupils for long expressions with an unknown.
