Multiplication as Repeated Addition
Elementary individually · in pairs print prep 2–5 minFREEMathematicsmultiplicationadditionfree
A generator of sums that add the same number again and again, for example 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. Choose a number from 1 to 10 and the generator repeats it one to ten times. Children see that three fours together are the same as 3 × 4.
On the website you place the sums on a worksheet and add an answer key if you like. They also go on game cards, such as memory where children match the sum to its answer, or into multiple-choice questions. It helps to ask children to write the matching multiplication next to each sum. Every time you generate, you get new problems.
It suits children in Year 3 (2nd grade) before they learn the times tables, and children who do not yet understand what multiplying means.
