Subtraction in Words

A generator of subtraction problems written in words. Instead of 12 – 5 = children read “the difference of 12 and 5”, “12 decreased by 5”, “5 less than 12” or “5 taken away from 12”. Choose the range, up to 5, 10, 20, 100, 1000 or a million, and for some ranges whether the problems cross the ten. The answer is never negative.

On the website you place the problems on a worksheet and add an answer key if you like. They also go on game cards such as memory with the words and the answer, or into multiple-choice questions. Every time you generate, you get new problems.

It suits children from Year 2 (1st grade). Phrases such as “5 less than” are needed for word problems and are often mixed up with addition. The problems are written in Czech.
